Night Scape

I am standing in my living room listening to the quiet. There is no wind tonight, no cars hurrying by, and no animal noises even thought the windows are open. It is late, or early depending on how you look at it, and I have paused in my pacing to listen to the complete silence of the world.

I am not sleeping tonight. It isn’t a matter of not wanting to sleep because I know that sleep is good for me, that I need it, and that tomorrow (later today) is going to be rough without it. It isn’t even that I can’t sleep. If I were to take a few of my little white pills, I am sure I would be able to fall asleep. I have had to turn to them in the past and I don’t feel any shame. But, tonight I am not interested to sleeping.

The Princess and the Wood

When Julie was in the third grade she wrote a short story. She carefully tore out three lined pages from her notebook and wrote her story in big block letters leaving space between each paragraph for a picture.

The story was very simple and direct. It told of how a beautiful princess was kidnapped by an evil queen and lost in the forest. The princess wandered around the forest for days looking for helpful talking animals but all the animals were mean and looked like they would rather eat the princess than talk to her. They didn’t eat her, however, because Julie felt that having the princess die in this manner would be counter productive to the “happily ever after” ending she was going for. Eventually the princess finds her way home and is greeted by her father. The two of them do then indeed live happily ever after. No one knows what happened to the evil queen.

Goals

There has to be a goal. That is what life is after all, a series of goals that we either meet or we don’t meet. One could judge a life of success versus a life of failure all on what goals were met and which were not.

That’s Brett’s view anyway, and in the summer when the air is always warm and the pavement is always hot under your feet and you are 22 and feel that the world is not only your oyster but your motherfucking oyster bar man, then it is ok to break down all of existence into good and bad, big and little,… goal met or goal denied.

Surface Dweller

We went back to her place because it was closer and because I was legitimately interested in seeing her art. Sleeping with her, sure, but art was what had brought me out to the gallery opening on such a gross rainy night in the first place and art had been the focus of our conversation for at least an hour before it dawned on me that she might be interested in more than just my ranting about the importance of oil paints as an aesthetic choice and water marks on paintings. Her overzealous and almost painful exuberance in the cab ride had not only embarrassed the driver but had also made it crystal clear.

Update (because 6 of you asked)

So… this morning I did one of those totally girly things I vowed to never do….

I squealed.

There was a bit of a hop, sashay, body movement as well.. but since my body seems to be in an almost constant state of movement (why walk to the fax machine when you can grape vine to the fax machine?) this isn't all that uncommon.

But the squeal? Now, that is unique and special.

And not in the good way.

And yes… it was over a boy.

In more relevant news I am writing... I haven’t fallen off the planet… its just that most of the stuff I have written lately has been deeply personal… or “being sick” induced and thus not really share-able.

But there are a few ideas bouncing around in my head today… so most likely there will be something up sooner rather than later.
